In 2002 Silvana and I had the opportunity to spend a week in Tokyo and make a day trip to Yokohama. We were shown around by Alberto, Silvana’s cousin. He is an architect and university professor who lives in Japan with his daughter Sara. Despite the shortness of the trip the culture and the people made a particularly intense, totally unforgettable impression.

Very concerned about the triple disaster, we were very open when Werner Fischer, friend and musician (e.g. of “chinese-soul”) asked ‘Isn’t there something we can do?’

When presenting a music production, how can we have the focus on the music and still create a visually engaging experience? This question is at the core of my new Flash website for the CD production ”Travelogue - Chinese Soul” by Jazz musician, Berkelee alumnus and old friend Werner Fischer.

Werner and his chinese wife are currently living in Bejing, hence the title of the CD. My ‘motiondrawing’-sketches are drawing heavily on the impressions of our trip to China in 2007.

‘Chinese Soul’ will tour China and Europe in automn 2011 – we are planning to take the visuals live on stage, projecting the sketches on a big screen and animate them to the live sound of the band. Stay tuned!

Update: read how the technique behind chinese-soul innovates the visualization of music
PR text in german courtesy Jan Krohn, author of the lyrics of chinese-soul:

palliative ch is the swiss association of over 2000 palliative care professionals and institutions.

On a technical level the main goals of the relaunch of the website were

make the content editable for the client, over time there will probably be several groups of editiors involved

the layout must be totally customizable

offer a framework which will allow the regional sections of the association to use the national website as a starting point for the integration of their webpresence, empowering them to update content themselves.

Obviously only a powerful Content Management System (CMS) can meet these requirements. After evaluating several systems we opted for Typo3, the main reasons being

well established in Europe, with plenty of developers, forums and support options

feature-rich and ‘mighty’

advanced rights-management for editors

good multi-language support

powerful template-building allows the implementation of just about any HTML/CSS Layout/Design

We never looked back and were totally satisfied with the choice of Typo3: we could meet the requirements easily, Typo3 really lived up to its reputation to be ’the Rolls-Royce among the CMS’. Or better said: Typo3 is like a gigantic construction kit with which you can build a table, a bicycle, a Rolls-Royce, a space ship – if you have the know-how and the time.

Here are some ‘lessons learned’

when they say it takes a month of learning to get the basics of Typo3, they mean it. Years of experience in programming will serve you little to get your head around the idiosyncratic TypoScript

when odd ‘internal server error’-messages start popping up it’s probably time to migrate to an ISP that is specialized in hosting Typo3 projects

yes, you can solve this problem with Typo3 – and the solution is probably surprisingly simple

Brave new globalized world: I, a webdeveloper based in Switzerland, collaborate in ‘real time’ in a political campaign in the antipodean parts of the globe – and it feels perfectly normal.

GetUp! is an independent political movement to build a progressive Australia. It brings together like-minded people who want to bring participation back into democracy. In its 3 years of operation, it has grown to over 300,000 members and achieved a considerable number of successes in more than 70 campaigns.

In view of the upcoming elections and 1.4 million unregistered voters they decided to launch a campaign to enrol as many voters as possible – online.

As part of a sophisicated web-application (developed by Funke), they commissioned me to program a ‘signature app’ that allows people to sign the form online, writing/drawing their signature with the mouse. It comes with ‘line normalization’ (smoothing) and draggable control points. The signature is saved as a PNG image on the server which is then added to the form that is finally sent to the authorities.

You can try the ‘signature app’ here

Thanks to GetUp! for the great collaboration, especially to Daryl Manning, Director of Online Campaigning, François Chemillier, Online Campaigner and Robert D’Arrigo, Senior Web Developer of Funke.
